🔗 Share this article The Year 2026 Dubbed the Age of the Amphibian Adventure. My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games. No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Given that a gathering of frogs is called an army, it seems they are launching an invasion. A Legacy of Leaping Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. Yet, their visibility has seemingly exploded in recent times. A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are bona fide amphibian adventures. Charting the Croak Comeback To understand this phenomenon, I conducted a deep dive into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots. The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025. This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's rising status in the public consciousness is also evident elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the trend in gaming seems particularly strong. Designing for a Sticky Tongue In my opinion, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs offer built-in creative potential for game developers. Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game. Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues facilitate a wide array of innovative control schemes. Many of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer. The Leap Into 2026 So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year so far. Should these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be on the verge of a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
