The hosts secured a 93-run victory

Pakistan halted the reigning champions South Africa's winning streak by completing a 93-run victory in an entertaining and closely contested opening Test in Lahore.

The Proteas, whose 10-Test unbeaten run in the longest format ended with victory over Australia in the World Test Championship final in June, were bowled out for 183 chasing 277.

Starting the day on 51-2, they saw the dismissal of century-maker Tony de Zorzi leg before wicket to left-arm quick Afridi to the third ball of the day to shift the tightly balanced chase in the home team's favor.

Left-arm spinner Noman, who secured 10-191 in the game, dismissed Tristan Stubbs for two and bowled Dewald Brevis, who put up a fight with a rapid 54.

Right-arm spinner Sajid also took advantage of sharp turn to terminate opening batsman Rickelton's innings - he faced 145 deliveries for 45 - and Shaheen returned in the post-lunch session to dismiss the tail with a impressive exhibition of reverse swing.

He had Verreynne lbw for nineteen and bowled Prenelan Subrayen and Kagiso Rabada to secure the victory.

It was both sides' first match of the 2025-2027 Test championship cycle and moves the hosts directly into the number two spot after table-toppers Australia.

Their victory was built around key performances of 93 by opener Imam-ul-Haq and, crucially, all-rounder Salman Agha which lifted them to 378.

After that spinners Noman and Sajid Khan utilized helpful home pitches, as they had in their series victory over England the previous year, to maintain their advantage.

The next and last match begins on 20 October.
