China's Figure Skaters Under Probe Following Displaying Prop Weapon during Event

The International Skating Union have launched a formal inquiry after two Chinese figure skaters appeared holding what looked like a toy ballistic missile during an international skating competition.

Television video showed Ren Junfei and Xing Jianing sitting with a sizable prop in the form of a missile labeled “DF-61” as they awaited the judges' results in the “kiss and cry” area on Saturday.

This model represents a new Chinese-made land-based intercontinental ballistic missile capable of transporting atomic warheads, that had been displayed during a national ceremony recently.

“The ISU is aware that an inappropriate soft toy seems to have been among those thrown on to the rink by spectators after a routine at the ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix Cup of China event,” the ISU stated in an emailed statement.

“The soft toy was subsequently handled by the skaters after their performance. We regrets this occurrence and will investigate further.”

The duo placed in eighth place of 10 pairs in the ice dance event, which was won by the American pair of the United States.
