A Tooth Fairy Tale Film Analysis: Cartoon Adventure with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Tween Romance

Throughout this cartoon adventure aimed at tweens, the world of fairies is dedicated to collecting baby teeth of slumbering youngsters and placing treasure beneath where they sleep. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a sentiment that’s entirely reasonable. He is just slightly more interested in the financial workings of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who supply gold as payment. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the hideous creature he had imagined.

A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat

The stage is set for an exciting quest with a gentle touch of young love (though it’s very much suitable for younger kids). The goblin and fairy communities are estranged from each other, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings together. The two species as seen here are remarkably alike, yet each holds biased views about the other. The fairies are said to be entitled sorts, given to stealing whatever they fancy, while goblins are reportedly stupid, smelly, and primitive, but are in fact bright and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario requires a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met by some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush with these guys: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, if not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Overall Impression

There aren’t all that many animated films aimed at the kind of audience that is beginning to have early romances, but aren’t yet old enough for the content teenagers view these days instead of Twilight. If your child falls into this age group, it probably won’t to be their next favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.

The Tooth Fairy Story releases in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
